Marge Monko and Roland Roos, residents of PH Warsaw

Marge Monko in PROGR

Marge Monko was accepted for a two months residency in the culture center PROGR in Bern. The photography comes from the “Studies of Bourgeoisie” series realised in 2007. The focus of interest of the Estonian artist is the women community of her country. She is interested in the stereotypes which guide the way people think of them –through a series of photography in the style of Renaissance portraits, titled the Estonian Woman, Monko asks the question about the relevance and sense of a statement that Estonian women are beautiful, and in the Studies of Bourgeoisie project she deals with the 19th century picture of a hysterical woman and its influence over the way we see women today.
Since 2005, Marge Monko has also been a lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Fine Arts in Tallin.

Roland Roos in a-i-r laboratory

Roland Roos, an artist from Zurich, will stay until March for a three months residency in a-i-r laboratory in CCA Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw. He continues here his Free Repair project. Since early 2008 the artist has repaired broken, displaced or damaged things in the urban environment. Each repair is intended to restore a particular detail to its pre-damaged state. The focus is on mending as opposed to extension or modification. Therefore, the changes are minor and it is unlikely people will ever notice them. Before and after the repair a photograph is taken of the unsolicited assignment. The photo taken before the repair is the only existing document of the damaged objects and thus becomes a unicum. All of these unicum photos are for sale and cost 320CHF each, the average amount of money that is spent for one repair (materials and labor).

Free Repair is an ongoing project and the goal is to add every week a new work. It will last until 100 things have been fixed (approx. early 2010).
